Converting 3D File Formats
Tools
If you are modeling in an application that doesn't export directly to .3DS, .X, .AC, or .LWO format, your best bet is a third-party conversion utility. There are many such utilities available. Before settling on one, make sure that it will retain, at a minimum, the geometry and UV coordinates of your native format. Without the UV coordinates, you won't get a texture map. Ideally, the converter would also translate material/surface properties.
Milkshape is a $20 shareware product that, among other things, can import and export a variety of different 3D formats. It can also do some basic 3D modeling.
Deep Exploration is another 3D conversion program, but it's price has swollen to $250 at last check.
A third option may be my very basic VRML2 to LWO converter. It converts geometry and UV coordinates, but that's about it. I am hoping to add new features in the future, when I have time. If you are on a mac, this may be your only option, unless you have access to a PC or are using VPC.
