Targetware: Scenario Development

Scenario Designer User's Guide

Getting Started

Installation

You can install the Scenario Designer and related files in any directory you like, as long as you keep the Scenario Designer application in the same directory as the "editor_data" folder that is installed with it. You do not have to put it in your Targetware/ directory, but you can if you prefer.

The First Time You Run It

Double click the Scenario Designer icon to start up the application. The first time you start up, it will prompt you to locate your Targetware data directory. The Scenario Designer must have access to installed Targetware mods in order to have enough information to assemble a valid scenario. Using the standard file browser, select the "data" dir, not the overall Targetware/ directory, or a mod directory such as Targetware/data/tr/ or Targetware/data/tk/. If you do not select a directory with at least one .mod file in it, the Scenario Designer will be unable to continue.

You can point the Scenario Designer to a different Targetware data directory at any time, by using the Preferences menu item.

Startup Menu

After the Scenario Designer starts up, you will be presented with a simple window offering three choices: Create a new scenario, load an existing scenario, or quit.

Startup Window

To create a new scenario from scratch, first select a Mod from the dropdown menu at right, then click the "Create New Scenario" button. The Mod selection menu contains a list of all mods, Standalone and Hybrid, that are installed in the Targetware/data/ folder you specified in the previous step.

To edit an existing scenario, click on the "Load Scenario" button, then use the file browser to locate a Targetware .scn scenario file. You can load a scenario file from any location on your computer.

After you load a scenario or create a new one, the Scenario Designer will take a few moments to load in the game data associated with the mod. It only has to happen once per design session (unless you change mods, then it has to read in the new mod). Once this process is complete, you're ready to start designing your scenario!
