Targetware: Customizing Sound Effects

Replacing Default Sound Effects

Both Target Rabaul and Target Korea come with a default library of shared airplane sounds. There is one sound for gears, one sound for a prop engine, one sound for airframe stress, etc. This means that when you first install TR or TK, no matter what airplane you are in, you will be hearing the same sounds for each. If you don't like these sounds, you can replace them with ones of your own choosing. All you have to do to replace a sound file is put in a new sound file with the same name as the old file. When you replace one sound, the change will affect all airplanes that use the default sounds.

NOTE: Every mod uses it's own sound library, so if you want to change sounds in more than one mod, you have to make the change to each one.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Replacing a Default Sound

This procedure assumes that you have already prepared a sound in the format used by Targetware. See the previous page if you have not completed this step for at least one sound.

  1. Open the "data/sounds/" directory for your mod. You should see a long list of files that have names that end in ".wav". You may also see one or more sub-directories, ignore those.
  2. Locate the sound file that you wish to replace. It's probably a good idea to test play the sound to make sure it's the right one.
  3. Note the exact name of the file, copy it to the clipboard or write it down if you prefer.
  4. Delete, move, or rename the old sound file.
  5. Copy or move your new custom sound file into the /data/sounds/ directory.
  6. Rename it, if necessary, so that it matches the name of the original sound file from step 3.

That's all there is to it. The next time you start up Targetware, your new sound will play in place of the old one.
