Targetware: Customizing Sound Effects

Adding Plane-Specific Sound Effects

As of version 0.47 of the Targetware engine and TR/TK mod packs of 3/21/03, it is possible to add your own custom, unique sounds to every airplane. Not only can you now change the default sounds shared by all airplanes, you can now drop in custom versions for each airplane. The game engine will first look for optional, plane-specific sounds for a plane, and use them if found. If not present, it will use the default sounds provided for the Mod.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Adding/Replacing a Plane-Specific Sound

This procedure assumes that you have already prepared a sound in the format used by Targetware. See the page on TW Sound format if you have not completed this step for at least one sound.

  1. Open the "data/sounds/" directory for your mod. You should see a long list of files that have names that end in ".wav". You will also see a list of sub-directories.
  2. Note the exact name of the generic sound file you are going to replace. It should be something ending in ".wav"; typical names might be "engine.wav", "engine_stop.wav", etc.
  3. Make sure your new plane-specific custom sound file uses this exact name.
  4. Drop your custom sound file into the sub-directory of the airplane whose sound you wish to customize. Example: "f4u", "a6m", "tbf".

That's all there is to it. The next time you start up Targetware and select the plane, your new sound will play in place of the default sound one.
