Subject: News on the World War One Mod

An idle post made a few years back may have started a sequence of events that brings us to the topic of the day. [ http://forums.targetware.net/showthread.php?s=fd0c2cc30f61356d1b3100499c924744&threadid=1727 ]

I brought the idea up among some of my fellow flyers in IEN's WW1 sim and tried to stir up some interest. I didn't succeed. I don't know if any of my inquiries got Vlasov to thinking about starting the Target:Flanders Project or not. He may have been locked on to Targetware before I had even heard about it.

Vlasov invited me to join the development team about the time he had several flyable versions of the TF planeset. While it was rumoured that he was interested in my services as a community liason and sound file editor the truth is he needed a solid dependable target drone. I served in that capacity well. Over the period of my involvement with Target : Flanders we had some spurts of growth followed by inactive periods due to real life interference. I want to thank everyone involved with the Target : Flanders Project for providing a base from which the new World War One Targetware mod has grown. Vlasov, Jgro, Buzzbe and any others who preceeded my involvement with TF. Thanks to rabu ..[|;~' (Rob Hoag)
"Doane Design" as well for offering his "On the Edge" terrain tiles for use in this effort.

The following members of the Targetware community have conspired to bring you "Richthofen's Skies"

Russ "JoGunn" Lee

Dave "Blowhard" Douglass

Gerry "Mossie" Mos

John "Snafu" Hammonds

Royce "Jckent" Burnett

Ian" Jckentjr" Burnett

Robert "Fuzzy" Short

David "GH_Lieste" King

Micah "Yak" Bly

Ryerson "Rye" Clark

Darrell "Kiwi_flyer" Bradshaw

DS "Clipper" Bakker

Wells "Wells" Sullivan

Ralf "Raffel" Haupt

TR,TK,TH,TT Teams

The TK and TR teams as well as TH and TT have made contributions as well from particles to map and terrain guidance to providing examples of how it's done and contributions of models and textures for upcoming craft. My thanks again to those named above (myself excluded) for the efforts so far to make this happen. We have only scratched the surface of what's possible. The more this development team grows the more we can attempt to do.

We hope to make RS available to you soon after the 062 Targetware Engine update.

JoGunn you do your self an injustice. The fact that If not for you we would have all killed each other long ago. is testiment enough to the leadership displayed in pulling this thing together. WTG <S>.

I've pushed, pulled and prodded. Where the rubber meets the road you'll see the members of the dev team doing the heavy lifting to bring this Mod closer to realizing it's potential. There is more excellent work waiting in the wings that we will reveal after the launch.

I've just been to the Richthofen's Skies website, and I've got to say that I'm very impressed by the high quaility level of the modeling and texturing work that's displayed on the aircraft, the sim's objects, and the other visuals.

I hope to get up to speed here shortly so I can experience all this fine work that's been authentically rendered by the RS Team................thanks guys, and I hope to be joining you in the Skies in the not too distant future. Smile

Absolutely awesome. I can't tell you how pleased I am that this thing has seen the light of day. It has been over three years in the making. Congratulations to the team and especially to Jogunn.

I am still in Finland, but I should be home in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to try it out. You should see the grin on my face right now Very Happy

And I am glad to see the baby didn't go out with the bath water:

From the RS website: "Make each and every aerial victory a significant and dramatic event. Make every flight challenging."

Cool

Way to go, team--looks like all that hard work was well worth it. The terrain especially, with all those buildings and objects, looks gorgeous.
The planes have obviously been tweaked up pretty good, too... the Dr.I looks fantastic (in all it's schemes) and the upgraded cockpits are sweet, too.

Kudos all the way around.

Way cool. Can't wait.

Question, though. Why the break with the "Target:" naming scheme?

OH GOD NO, NO!

Don't go there. Trust me. Shocked

I think if we spent half the time we did discussing the name, on building the mod instead, well...

No, you do not want to go there.

It looks really, really nice...great job, guys...

but of course, you guys all know that I think breaking with the franchise name is a HUGE, FURRY marketing mistake of EPIC proportions. From this day forward, it will always take that much more effort to explain that Richthofen's Skies is an extention of Targetware, where all the others do it naturally. Frankly, I fail to see why RS is any more or less a viable name than Target:Richthofen. Sure, it shares an "R" with :Rabaul, but that's easily rectified by spelling it out, or adding Ri and Ra as distinguishers. Much less a problem than a reader being confused whether RS is a part of TW or not.

Er, uh, I'll shut up now. As Clipper says, this has been hashed through again and again.

But, still, if it's good enough, RS will be successful on its own merits.

I'll still fly it from time to time, no matter what the name is.

Why the break with the "Target:" naming scheme?

All I can say is I was strongly encouraged by the top echelon of TW to break free from Target: (anything). Who am I to argue with that? I am very happy with a free standing name at this point. The mod naming chore was perhaps the hardest thing to accomplish in that after much give and take and push and shove we all agree and make a decision only to find with a little further due diligence that that choice did indeed have a copyright after all and could not be used without about a $10,000 fee plus a percentage of sales. Since were not selling anything Smile we might have skated by the latter but I was not in position to fork over the $10K. So, off we went again on a naming battle.

I'm just waiting now for the Richthofen descendents to stop by and scorch my shorts. If that occurs I think the new name will be WW1 Thang! Let em try to take that one away LMAO~!

I have to admite, in my mind I'm still calling it Target: Richthofen's Skies. Dunno why just says more to me with target in front of it. As in your target is the skies of Richthofen's era.

I may still refure to it as TRS, in my bookmarks for Safari I have it listed as Target: Richthofen's Skies too...

Well, a $10K sword of damoclese over your head is a much better explanation than any other I've heard.
