Guys,
AC3D refuses to display correctly on my laptop. The only thing I havent tried is to reformat the bloody thing.
What would be a good alternative modelling program?
I bought this damn laptop to do some modelling, while I'm laid up, so am prepared for some more outlay if necessary. The current situation is just soul destroying its so frustrating.
Whats my options? |

I and a number of others use AC3D on a laptop, so what is going wrong ?
If we can't help then maybe Andy (maked of AC3D) could. |

at just $50, you really owe it to yourself to go to www.ac3d.org and try and work with Andy and the dev team over there to sort your problem. It sounds like a relatively small compatibility problem with a driver or something.
Your "alternatives" are very much more expensive. |

Wings3D is what I use. Works great for Targetware and best of all it is FREE. |

Sulky would have to solve not the one problem with AC3d but many many more after transfering to Blender or Wings. |

Thanks guys,
I've posted and emailed the AC3D site and atleast the plugin's author tried to help.
Whatever it triggered in AC3D is anyone's guess.
I guess Andy is too busy.
Its frustrating, as I've had ten hours a day available for the last thirty days and hoped to achieve
a fair bit. I've had to dump everything I'd done before the prob occured too as they've been contaminated as I realised what was going on.
Never had a prob force me to resort to formatting the box before and its making me grumpy |

Did a full System Restore with the System CDs.
Installed AC3D and now it tells me the license keys are invalid.
Tried a test object, a simple Box and had the wireframes disappear after inserting two vertex's and slicing between them.
AC3D dont answer forum posts or emails. |

Invalid keys sounds like lurking registry items... since you're installing it on the SAME machine, that should not be an issue, should it?
Keep trying with the emails and posts. I've yet to see something go unanswered for more than a few days. |

You'd think it shouldnt be a problem. I downloaded and used the latest version of AC3D5 and my license is a couple of months older, so maybe thats causeing the invalid keys thing.
Its two weeks since I asked for help in uninstalling it completely. The plugin's author responded in the thread but no-one from AC3D responded with an answer.
Dennis, the author, has worked hard to refine and rewrite the plugin. Its now working well. However he agrees that its triggered something in AC3D itself and cant do more than he already has to resolve my prob.
Havent heard if hlhudson has managed to get his running. He had the same prob. |

Y'know, it really could be as simple as a vacation... don't wanna offer any excuses, but all my dealings with Andy have been prompt, friendly, thorough, and professional. I dunno what the deal is with this particular case, but I certainly haven't known them to shy away from a code problem. If something can't be done (like the animation I keep asking for ), they'll come right out and say it.
Just keep trying, I'm sure this'll all sort itself out. |

Sure, he's probably got the flue or something.
Its cool, I'm starting to get more sanguine about it. Not going to waste any more time fighting the current. Writing and researching will consume the spare hours each day, so I'll dedicate the laptop to that. I find it just as satisfying.
Maybe I'll contribute to TR some other way, one day.
Thanks for your help. |
